One of the easiest things you can do on a daily basis to prevent premature aging is to wear sunscreen. The May issue of Allure magazine has an excellent article that discusses the "safe tanning" myth and explores the reasons why otherwise health-conscious women continue to tan. One of the experts interviewed for the article states that "using wrinkle treatments and tanning is three steps forward, two steps back". That's so true!
In recognition of May being National Skin Care Awareness Month, here are six of my recent sunscreen finds that I think are especially good:
Dermalogica Dynamic Skin Recovery with SPF 30 - This medium-weight lotion is a sunscreen with serious skin care, as you'd expect from Dermalogica. There are peptides to firm and protect, glucosamine to inhibit melanin formation--essential to preventing age spots, a chemical sunscreen to protect against UVA/UVB rays, white tea and other anti-oxidants for firmness and to stimulate collagen production. Comes in an easy to use pump. Available at Planet Beauty. $61.00
Colorscience Sunforgettable Brush SPF 30 - This clear, mineral powder sunscreen is so versatile. You can apply it before or after being in the sun, or brush it on after applying makeup. I love that! This broad spectrum sunscreen protects agains UVA/UVB rays and is very water resistant. It comes in a swivel-up brush and cannister, so it's convenient to take along in a purse or to slip into a beach bag. Sunforgettable SPF 30 has received the FDA Seal of Approval and the Seal of Recommendation from the Skin Cancer Foundation of America. Available at Dermstore. $50.00
Bioelements SPF 50 FaceScreen - I could not believe how lightweight, yet rich this broad spectrum sunscreen formula is. I really expected this to be a heavy cream--especially with SPF 50. But it's got a whipped texture that wears well under makeup and/or over treatment products. In addition, there are anti-aging and skin-calming ingredients. Can be used by all skin types. Available in spas nationwide, Dermstore or SpaLook. A new favorite! $49.00
Anthelios 60 Sunscreen with CELL-OX Shield - This new sunscreen is available starting today, from LaRoche-Posay. Anthelios 60 Sunscreen with CELL-OX Shield offers a combination of more stabilized UV filters to deliver longer-lasting protection, plus a combination of antioxidants that protects skin from environmental aggressors. Available in three formulas at select physicians offices,CVS/pharmacy, Duane Reade, Longs and Brooks locations with Dermo-Skincare Centers, and online at www.larocheposay.us.
Garnier Nutritioniste Skin Renew Anti-Sun Damage Daily Eye Cream SPF 15 - This new eye cream is the first "mass market" eye cream recommended by the Skin Cancer Foundation. The formula contains lycopene, 2x Vitamin C and soothing minerals to help reverse the signs of sun damage around your eyes. This broad spectrum eye cream is a white lotion--you have to blend it in well, but it does absorb into skin. I did not experience that it made my makeup run or smudge. Available in mass market retailers for a suggested retail price of $12.99 (with a $1.00 coupon/sample in the May Allure!).
Sephora Sun Safety Kit - This collection of "try-me" sizes not only lets you sample some great summer skincare; 100% of the net profit from sales of this set benefit The Skin Cancer Foundation. A Sephora exclusive. $22.50
