Although this has been a rough winter, it's perfect for testing hand creams! My hands have been dry and reddened from exposure to the wind, along with cracked skin. Not a pretty sight. I've been trying to fight back and find that perfect moisturizer to restore my hands.
To be an effective hand cream, the formula should contain a combination of ingredients --humectants to help prevent dehydration, emollients to soften skin and occlusives, like petroleum, to protect skin. While not scientific, the things I look for, in addition to ingredients, are how it feels on the skin, how long the effects last and consistency of the product.
These are what I consider the best winter hand creams, in all price ranges:
Sally Hansen has a wonderful assortment of hand creams out now and they're really terrific. My favorite is the Sally Hansen 18 Hour Protective Hand Cream. Made with shea butter, vitamins a,c and e this hand cream softens, smooths and protects your skin. Absorbs easily and helps fight age spots. Approximately $ 6.49.
Bath & Body Works Shea Cashmere Hand Cream is made with luxe African Shea Butter and silky Mongolian Cashmere Extract to deeply hydrate and nourish skin for a smooth, creamy finish. Smells heavenly! $ 14.50.
Elemis Pro-Collagen Hand Cream: This non-greasy hand cream does it all: targets
skin crepiness, sun damage, redness, discoloration, weakened nails and dryness. Treats hands and nails. I love how it feels--so conditioning. It's perfect for a nighttime treatment. $ 60.
LaMer The Hand Treatment: LaMer's marine proteins, botanicals and antioxidants help to resurface, protect and heal your hands by creating a protective, emollient barrier to prevent dehydration and soothe the skin. The Hand Treatment does more than just moisturize; it helps improve age spots and the appearance of your hands. If you like to pamper yourself, the LaMer The Hand Treatment is for you. $70.
Amorepacific Time Response Hand Renewal Cream: A treatment product for your hands that delivers anti-aging benefits in addition to intense moisturizing. Replenishes moisture, heals dry skin and restores clarity and luminosity to your hands. What I like is that the Amore Pacific Time Response Hand Renewal Cream provides 24 hour time release protection when used twice a day. Ingredients include anti-oxidants, brighteners, hydrators and firming/toning actives. $80.
Carol's Daughter Lemon and Rose Hand Cream: This is a light handcream that comes in a tub, not a tube. Coming from Carol's Daughter, I knew I was in for something special and the Lemon and Rose Hand Cream doesn't disappoint. Made with essential oils, it takes a few minutes to absorbs into your skin to help condition and relieve dryness. Nice at timetime used with cotton gloves. $ 12.
Kiehl's Unusually Rich But Not Greasy At All Hand Cream with SPF 10: The name of this hand cream says it all! Of the 3 Kiehl's hand creams I've tried, this is the hand cream I've reached for over and over again. I love that it conditions with avocado oil and vitamin E, all the while protecting your hands with SPF 10 to help prevent age spots. A great everyday hand moisturizer! $ 15.50.
Liz Earle Hand Repair: This natural hand cream is made with essential oils, glycerin (a humectant) and anti-oxidants. Absorbs easily into skin; texture is light, more like a lotion. The Liz Earle Hand Repair has a fresh, herbal fragrance. 5 oz. pump $ 38.
Jurlique Citrus Hand Cream: This rich, protective hand cream restores moisture and smoothness to skin. Contains natural essential oils, as well as aloe, anti-oxidants and lactic acid. Jurlique is known for their certified organic and biodynamic products. $ 25.
